On Saturday 21 May 2022, the Müller Birmingham Diamond League returns to the city and will take place in the Alexander Stadium. This will be the first international athletics event in the iconic, revamped venue.

To support the Diamond League event and test some elements of the local area traffic management and parking plan proposed for the Games, there will be temporary changes to the way vehicles can travel and park around the stadium on the 21 May.

To protect access for residents and businesses during the event, ‘controlled parking’ zones will be in place. This means you will need a ‘permit’ to access and/or park on the roads highlighted on the map.

Residents and businesses on affected ‘controlled parking’ zones should have received a letter with a ‘permit’ enclosed. You are asked to bring the ‘permit’ with you on journeys on the day of the event, to show to stewards located at key junctions to access roads, and place it in the windscreen when parking on-street.

Two ‘permits’ were enclosed with the letter, but if you have a requirement for more, then proof of address will be accepted as well as the ‘permits’.

Any delivery driver or service provider trying to pass a vehicle permit checkpoint will need to provide proof of manifest / order confirmation to the address they are travelling to, along with their personal company ID.

Residents who receive essential council services, such as assisted care, will continue to do. Suitable documentation and ID will need to be presented to travel past a checkpoint.

If you are expecting other visitors, please make them aware of the restrictions.

The event will take place from 11:30AM – 4:15PM. However, access and parking restrictions will come into place from 7AM – 8PM (apart from Church Road, where no on street parking will be allowed from Friday 20 May – Sunday 22 May).

What else will be happening in the area?

There will be no parking available at or near to the stadium for spectators. There will be shuttle bus services running from Birmingham city centre and a park and ride site at Bescot Stadium – also known as Banks’s Stadium, Walsall. To accommodate these services, there will be load zones on the A34, between Stadium Way and Church Road.

How is this different to Games time?

We are taking this opportunity to test elements of the transport plan which will be in place at Games time. We are also testing additional restrictions to protect local streets from spectator parking which are being made at the request of the local community through our ongoing ‘Get Set for the Games’ engagement.

While we are providing you a permit for this event due to timescales, you will need to apply for a local access and parking permit for the Games period. These permits will be issued by Birmingham City Council and posted to you on receipt of application. You will be written to directly and informed of how to apply for your ‘Games time’ permit(s) in the coming weeks.

Advice and support for businesses

Please ensure that employees and visitors to your site are aware of the local restrictions in place and where possible please pre-book customers in and provide them with confirmation that they are visiting your site. This will enable them to pass through any check points as smoothly as possible.

We will be running a dedicated business briefing in Perry Barr on Friday 13 May, where we will go through the traffic and parking plans in more detail and be on hand to answer any questions.
