Kyriakos Ioannou was the first Cypriot to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships and now he has been a Batonbearer for the first Commonwealth Games Association visited along the route of the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay.
At 37 years old, Ioannou has retired from competing, but he still supports his home nation and enjoys watching the Commonwealth Games. His retirement comes after a very successful career. He first competed internationally at the young age of 17, with his first medal coming shortly after, in 2003, at the Military World Games.
Amongst many international competitions, he has competed in two Commonwealth Games: Melbourne 2006 and Glasgow 2014, during which he won a bronze and silver medal respectively.
